Google Chrome on Ubuntu can be installed by downloading the .deb package from their website.

It can be that Chrome starts to fail updating itself. In that case go to "Software and updates" and the following entry to the "Other Software" section:

deb [arch=amd64] https://dl.google.com/linux/chrome/deb/ stable main

Now you should be able to update Chrome using the system package manager.
